Biography
Sophia Kunxu Dou (b. Dec 2007) is a composer based in New York City. She currently studies at Juilliard Pre-College with Dr. Daniel Felsenfeld. She is a winner of 2023 ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Awards, The American Prize in Composition--Orchestra, 2024, The 2025 First Commission Award, and a finalist for National Young Composers Challenge 2023 & 2024, The American Prize in Composition--Instrumental Chamber and From the Top’s Fellowship.
Sophia received commissions from Composers Now, Inc. and YouTube creators for electronic underscore. She has been a member of New York Youth Symphony since 2022 and the recipient of honorable mentions from Luna Composition Lab 2022-2023 and 2023-2024. She has been selected for Boston University Tanglewood Institute Young Artists Composition Program 2024, Yellow Barn Young Artists Program 2025 and The Dolphins Quartet Young Composers Program 2025.
Besides being performed in Juilliard concerts, Sophia’s works have been recognized and performed as part of Sounds of US Festival at Kennedy Center, Busan Maru International Music Festival, Composers Now Festival, An Evening with Tania León. She collaborated with Grammy Award-Winning conductor David Miller, Little Orchestra Society, Juilliard Pre-College Orchestra, BUTI Young Artist Orchestra, NYYS Chamber Orchestra, International Contemporary Ensemble, Dolphins Quartet, Harlem Chamber Players, Aizuri Quartet, Avec String Quartet, Parhelion Trio, etc.
Sophia has also received awards in visual arts, piano, violin, poetry and Mathematics. She aspires to challenge artistic expressions through interdisciplinary collaborations where music, dance, visual arts, and theatre collide.
